Arnold & Komarov Wandertheater – Todeslieder

Todeslieder is an exploration of rituals of farewell in the face of death and the function of music in individual or collective mourning processes. Can music be a means of distilling memory and nurturing it? Can it give form to grief, even comfort it?

Based on conversations with mourners about parting, about memories, also about musical wishes and preferences, a song cycle will be created. Not only “musical experts”, but specifically also “lay people” will be invited to the exchange, people who bring their own expertise, namely the knowledge about loss and farewell. Each song is composed for a concrete personal life and farewell experience, whether for listening, singing along, for rituals, for dancing or much more.
Once the cycle is complete, it will be performed live in a concert staging. In the context of this production, the process of creation also becomes visible and perceptible.

It may be possible to pursue the universal in mourning in the face of death and farewell and to make this audible.

Kick-off of the pilot phase at the Hinterhalt Festival in Uster.
Conceived as a long-term project, the pilot phase is dedicated to remembering. Memorabilia such as texts, music, thoughts, pictures, things are mounted on the BIG NIGHT SHIRT OF MEMORIES. Equipped with the memories, the shirt serves as a costume for many who set off on a joint musical walk.
