Zino Wey – screening invisibilities

screening invisibilities is an associative exploration of invisibility. An encounter with the ambivalence of this political term and a questioning of how we deal with it. Invisibility can describe a desirable state, but is mostly the descriptor of a powerlessness and sign of oppression. Who is seen in our society and who is not? Does visibility actually have to do with our seeing or rather with norms? And how can I make someone disappear? Together with an ensemble of hearing and deaf¹ artists, Basel director Zino Wey initiates an exploration of these questions. Signs, gestures, movement, dance and music are used to develop their own body language and to design a new space that asks more about what is common than what is different. A poetic-political manifesto for visibility.

¹: The adjective ‘deaf’ is used in capitalization. It is a self-designation of “people who feel connected to sign languages, deaf communities and cultures.”
