Despite it being enormously long and allegedly ‘unreadable’, the experimental novel «The Making of Americans» has had a central role in the literature and art scene for more than a century. Why is this avant-garde work still such a hot topic today? It is set at a time when Europe was a continent of emigrants. Over one weekend in December, people from all areas of work and life will gather to perform the entirety of Stein’s text in a marathon reading. The audience will experience a 70-hour continuous read-in. Gertrude Stein insisted that the text must be read aloud and in groups; since 1974, marathon readings of the «Americans» have become quite a tradition in New York. The reading in Basel will be accompanied by group cooking sessions, talks and introductions to the text.
