Anan Fries – R.I.P. – Resurrect In Peace

“Resurrect In Peace (R.I.P.)” is a funeral for a bird. More than a hundred years ago, the migratory pigeon was wiped out, and now it is being bidden farewell with a techno-intensive ritual at HAU3. “R.I.P.” deals with the relationship between human and non-human animals. In the midst of the first human-caused extinction of species, “R.I.P.” celebrates the finite nature of all existence and questions the political potential of a possible revival. “R.I.P.” is a ceremonial admission of guilt, a speculative immersion, a lament in computer graphics. The background of Anan Fries’ new production, again made in collaboration with Malu Peeters, is a current project in the USA. This one tries to bring the migratory pigeon back to life in the lab. Three performers become masters of ceremonies of a farewell ritual by means of motion capture, a process in which physical movement data is converted into digital data.
